Shifting Scales

Plant life plays a crucial role in fighting climate change by absorbing and transforming greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Mosses, tiny plants often ignored or treated as the scourge of perfect lawns, are superheroes of the plant world. They help fight air pollution and the climate crisis, maintain healthy soils, colonise bare ground, paving the way for other plants to grow, and survive harsh environments ranging from deserts to polar regions.

This work aims to bring attention to the often-overlooked species of nature, namely moss. Drawing inspiration from the book Gathering Moss' by Robin Wall Kimmerer and following the methodology of
'slowing down and coming close', we have attempted to create pieces of work that depict our observations from deep seeing.

Following a feminist approach to co-creating artwork, this outcome is coauthored by the efforts of five people. Ultimately, it does not belong to one but appreciates and encourages the idea of co-owning, just as we need to own all forms of nature. Through the method of exchanging canvases and co-creating, the artworks encapsulate the essence of all the different ways in which we encountered moss. Various media and a unique but shared methodology of making is employed to come up with these distinguished pieces of artwork, reflecting the diverse nuances of the tiny moss world.
